Young Street Refresh and City Centre Greening

In an effort to improve the appearance of the city centre Council is undertaking a range of refresh works, muchNepean Highway Garden Beds of which will be complete in time for the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships. This project includes 'Young Street Refresh' and 'City Centre Greening'.

Young Street Refresh

Council is in the process of improving the look and feel of Young Street, near the station entrance. Proposed improvements, currently in the planning, design and approval stage, include:

  • A new bus shelter, fencing, planting, signage
  • New coloured surfaces on the pedestrian crossing and taxi rank area
  • New street furniture
  • New in-ground signage
  • New planter boxes / seats
  • Painted tiled wall (north of the station entrance) -Some minor pedestrian disruption may occur.

City Centre Greening works

Council will also be undertaking a range of greening works to improve the look and feel of city centre streetsNepean Highway Garden Beds and public areas.

  • 24 trees have already been planted in various locations including Beach, Keys, Young, Davey and Playne Streets and the Playne Street car park
  • Planting of 29 more trees in Young and Playne Streets, and the car parks in Playne Street and Davey Street has begun
  • Council is researching a new tree species for a site in Thompson Street that has very wet soil
  • Council is currently seeking formal approval to plant palm trees along Nepean Highway (near Davey Street) to bring back the beach feeling to the city centre
  • All garden beds will be replanted or 'thickened up'.

Planting projects such as test garden beds in the Nepean Highway are helping to identify greening opportunities within the Frankston city centre.
