Background

The Melbourne South East (MSE) Region includes the municipalities of Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Cardinia, Casey, Kingston, Knox, Maroondah, Monash, Mornington Peninsula and Whitehorse.

The municipalities of this region plus representatives from utility companies Jemena and South East Water, Connect East, and both the Victorian and Australian governments have aligned themselves and formed the regional group Melbourne South East (MSE).

This group has developed a long term strategy focusing on the delivery of projects of regional significance to enhance sound economic development of the region. The 2003 Regional Economic Strategy identified a range of projects of regional significance to promote businesses and and employment development. The group has played an important role in influencing and implementing economic policy at local, state and federal government level.

The Reviewed Regional Economic Strategy

The 2003 Strategy has now been reviewed with input from the business community, Councils and government agencies. At a search conference in 2008 a range of strategic issues facing Melbourne's South Eastern economy were considered. These issues were in the areas of:

  • Skills and employment
  • Transport
  • Other infrastructure
  • Innovation
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Social cohesion and culture
  • Urban planning and growth
