Community Gardens

Site Location Audit

This Community Garden Site Location Audit identifies suitable future sites for community gardens and enables Council to respond to future requests. It is not a definitive or exhaustive list, as community interest in other sites may create a significant level of demand for them to be considered on a case by case basis. In the first instance this list is a guide for interested community groups and residents in locating a potential new site/s for community gardens.

The Community Gardens Site Location Audit rates a number of public open spaces against identified criteria that are recognised as best practice. In the table, the first listed locations in each suburb are those that meet most of the criteria and are identified as preferred sites. Other locations are included, but clearly do not meet most of the criteria.

Community Gardeners

Community Gardens

Community Gardens are a community space where people come together to grow their own fruit and vegetables and learn about gardening. Some people have their own plots, others share a plot. All community gardens are different, that is part of their charm, they may include:

  • Sensory garden
  • Cooking facilities
  • Accessible/disability friendly
  • Social activities
  • Training
  • Art projects
  • Seed saving
  • Family days
  • Working bees
  • Individual and group plots
  • Links to other groups
  • Undercover area
Tomatoes
Everyone is welcome to have a plot in their local community garden, if all the plots are taken, there might be a waiting list. Sometimes organisations (disability services, schools, kindergartens or others) get a plot and share the love and labour between members. Members do not always have a plot in the community garden, they might join to get support and grow their produce in their own backyard.
