Municipal Fire Prevention
Plan 2010 - 2014

Reduce the likelihood of a fire with Councils involvement

Frankston City Council in collaboration with the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), Parks Victoria (PV), and Community Groups have developed a Fire Prevention Plan which aims to encourage active involvement with residents in reducing the likelihood and consequence of fire in the municipality. It is then presented through Municipal Fire Prevention Committees (MFPC) for approval and further contributions.

Current Fire Restrictions

The CFA will usually introduce the declared Fire Danger Period at 1am on the 1st of December and this will continue to end at 1am on the 1st of May unless revoked earlier due to seasonal conditions. Frankston City Council falls into the CFA's Central Fire Ban District. For up-to-date information on current fire restrictions within the City of Frankston please visit the CFA Website.

Fire Inspections

Inspections for fire hazards are conducted at the beginning of November. This is done to ensure residents have taken necessary action to have their properties in a fire ready state.

Poorly maintained properties are a risk to both life and property from the threat of fire, including that of your neighbours. If your property is not in a fire ready state, you may be issued with a Fire Hazard Notice.

This notice issued under the CFA Act or Local Law requires you to comply with the direction of the notice or risk an infringement being issued and compulsory clearance of the fire hazard(s) at the cost of the owner. Please be aware that permits may be required to clear native vegetation.

Please check with Town Planning on 1300 322 322 before doing so (see native vegetation warning section below for more information).

Vacant and Bush Blocks

If you have a vacant or bush block, it is also important that it is maintained in a fire ready state. This includes cutting any grass so that it is no higher than 75mm, removing any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote fire, removing noxious weeds and ensuring a clean fence-line. In some circumstances, you may require a fire-break between your property and adjacent properties. Fire Hazard Notices may also be issued on vacant and bush blocks, not just residential properties.
