Living with Unmade Roads

Road Grader
The importance and use of unmade roads has increased over the years with the spread of urban development. Unmade roads provide the traditional link between rural areas and the urban transport system. Traffic volumes and seasonal changes may cause the road surface to become dusty, muddy or rough, and in some cases impassable. Always drive to the conditions; for example the advisory speed for dusty conditions is less than 40KPH.

Unmade Roads

Your Responsibility and the Law

Frankston City Councils underlying approach is to develop and nurture a commitment from the community to construct all un-made roads over time, through special charge street schemes.

It is important to note that under the Local Government Act, Council is not required to undertake any maintenance work on unmade roads, including grading and drainage works.

Costs:

The cost of maintaining an un-made road is nearly 3 times the cost of maintaining a sealed road.

Sealed Roads:

For comparison purposes, the City has 719km of made road network, equating to $3,000 per kilometre.

Un-made Roads:

The remaining 41km of un-made road maintenance is at a rate of $9,000 per kilometre.

Safety First

When approaching the grader with the flashing lights in operation, keep your vehicle well clear and observe any safety warning signs erected.

Cars are going too fast!

The speed limit for all unsigned local roads is 50KPH.
Always drive to the conditions for example; the advisory speed for dusty conditions is 40KPH or less. Specialist Advisory signage is in place on some busy unmade roads.
