Frankston Healthy City Health and Wellbeing Plan 2007 - 2011
Frankston City is a fantastic place to live, work and spend time. As a place and as a community, the municipality is changing and developing. Planning has an important role to play in shaping the future, and planning for the community's health and wellbeing is essential. The Health and Wellbeing Plan works towards developing local community solutions to community issues that affect health and wellbeing.
Frankston City's health and wellbeing priorities for 2007-2011 are to promote:
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Physical Activity
- Healthy Eating
Research shows that these three factors are closely linked and can have a significant effect on the health and wellbeing of the all community. A focus on healthy eating, having an active lifestyle and being connected to the community can reduce chronic health problems such as heart disease, lung disease, mental illness, diabetes and osteoporosis. Every member of our community can contribute to health and wellbeing in Frankston City.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
The recommended level of physical activity for adults is around five sessions per week, each lasting for 30 minutes, and more for children. The Frankston - Healthy City: Health and Wellbeing Plan 2007-2011 aims to increase levels of physical activity in Frankston City by:
- Promoting active transport (walking and cycling)
- Encouraging participation in sports, active recreation and active arts to children at school, the general community, workplaces and older people
- Improving bicycle tracks and footpaths and providing maps of walking and cycling paths and routes in Frankston City
- Helping to make sporting clubs and active recreation activities affordable for people on low incomes
- Researching the patterns of physical activity in Frankston City to help further planning
HEALTHY EATING
Healthy food is a basic building block of physical and mental health.
The Frankston - Healthy City: Health and Wellbeing Plan 2007-2011 aims to promote healthy eating in Frankston City by:
Improving the supply of affordable fresh food, starting with a project in Frankston North and extending to other areas where the supply of fresh food is limited
Raising awareness of healthy eating guidelines, including the importance of healthy food across the lifespan and providing training to help people select, prepare, store and serve healthy food
Supporting community gardens
Establishing a Frankston City Food Policy Council to address food access and supply problems into the future, and to be a central source of information for the community.
MENTAL HEALTH
The Frankston - Healthy City: Health and Wellbeing Plan 2007-2011 has a range of strategies for improving people's mental and emotional health and wellbeing in Frankston City:
