International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination – May 17

In support of our community members who identify as LGBTQIA+, Council annually participates in International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrations.
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) marks the day 31 years ago (May 17, 1990) when the world Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. IDAHOBIT celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.
Frankston City Council’s IDAHOBIT Activities on 17th May 2022:
Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony and Morning Tea (9:30 - 11pm)

Frankston City Council Staff and Community members who identify as LGBTQIA+ and their allies are invited to come together for Frankston City Council’s annual Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony to acknowledge the history of IDAHOBIT, show support for LGBTQIA+ people globally and raise awareness for the need to combat discrimination.

Frankston City Council’s Job Advocates are celebrating IDAHOBIT and helping people to overcome discrimination. Job Advocates provide free 1:1 consultations in a safe and inclusive space to discuss specific barriers to employment and study, linking people with tailored support and culturally specific services. Consultations are available for people 15+ with all clients at this session receiving a free Rainbow cupcake from Writers Bloc Café.
IDAHOBIT Library Forecourt Activation (3pm - 5pm)

Frankston Youth Services, Frankston City Libraries and Jobs Advocates Victoria welcome and support LGBTQIA+ communities. To celebrate IDAHOBIT, the Library Forecourt will be activated with free rainbow themed activities for all ages including:
- Art activities including paining our Library piano
- Gender Pronoun Badge Making
- 1:1 Job Advocate consultations
- LGBTQIA+ Information and Resources
FrankTALK with Dr Yves Rees (5pm - 6pm)

This International day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination, we are joined by author, historian and podcaster, Dr Yves Rees in conversation with Clair Halliday, to talk about All About Yves. This special live event will explore Dr Yves Rees’ timely, honest and thought provoking memoir about the trans experience. This free event is for ages 16+ and bookings are essential.
