National Tree Day for Schools
Schools Tree Day - Friday 25 July, 2025
Registrations open in February 2025.
Each year Frankston City supports kindergartens, pre-schools, primary and secondary schools in our municipality to improve their natural environment by providing free indigenous plants on Schools Tree Day. Indigenous plants provide food, habitat and shade for local wildlife. They also provide a beautiful environment for young people to play and students to learn how to care for, protect and restore the local environment, positively storing carbon and intercepting stormwater runoff to help improve our local natural environment.

Schools Tree Day - Friday 26 July, 2024
Schools Tree Day was held on Friday the 26th of July with 50 participating centres and schools planting 2,590 indigenous plants. Planting projects fell into the following categories:
- Bush kinder, bush tucker and nature play
- Community partnerships
- Fostering cultural and environmental stewardship values
- Kitchen garden program
- Habitat for wildlife
- Revegetation and ground improvements including shade provision
- Student and teacher engagement
- Sustainability curriculum and leadership program
The majority of schools from last year reported that most of their plants survived over summer, with only a couple of schools having no success due to building works, poor siting, soil and theft.
The two Environmental Ambassador Schools were Ballan Park Primary and McClelland Secondary College, Janet Wheeler from ‘Living with Wildlife’ ran presentations that focused on local flora and fauna. One of the highlights this year was that the schools were located next to each other, and as a result the secondary students were able to assist the primary school students with planting.
