Suva Fiji
The capital of Fiji and a harbour city built on a peninsula reaching out into the sea, Suva has a mix of modern buildings and traditional colonial architecture. The city is perched on a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour and is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, in the Central Division, of the Rewa Province. In 1877, it was decided to make Suva the capital of Fiji when the geography of the former main European settlement at Levuka on the island of Ovalau proved too restrictive.
Suva is the commercial and political centre of Fiji, and the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. A multiracial and multicultural city, Suva’s most widely spoken language is English with Fijian, Hindustani, Cantonese and other Indian languages also spoken by their respective communities.
Due to its tropical rainforest climate, Suva sees a copious amount of rainfall throughout the year, averaging 3,000 mm of rain annually. Even its driest month, July, averages 125 mm of rain per year. Like many other cities with a tropical rainforest climate, temperatures are relatively constant throughout the year, with an average high of about 28°C and an average low of about 22°C.
Our Agreement
Frankston City Council and the Suva City Council agreed to establish a relationship based upon equal and mutually beneficial activities, collaboration and information sharing, particularly focussed on:
• Cultural enhancement and the attraction of cultural tourism and events opportunities
• Education, training and economic opportunities
• Information sharing in relation to local government delivered community services and infrastructure
• Community support through resource sharing where appropriate and available
Both parties have agreed to make joint efforts to expand government and non-government cooperation to promote and strengthen exchanges of information and support.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the Victorian Multicultural Sports Association for their instrumental role in bringing Frankston and Suva together in developing a Sister City relationship.
Past Cooperation
In June 2021, Frankston City Council provided a donation of $5,500 AUD towards the delivery of hospital beds as part of the assistance to Fiji to assist with their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In October 2021, Frankston City Council coordinated further critical humanitarian assistance with the support of the local community and many local businesses to donate approximately $8,400 of essential materials and goods, particularly aimed at mothers and baby products for newborns. Additionally, Council provided a further financial donation of $6,000 AUD to assist the Fijian community in their ongoing COVID-19 recovery efforts.
