Wuxi China
Wuxi, China is on the Yangtse River and located half way between the cities of Shanghai and Nanjing, in the south of Jiangsu Province.
Because of its recent growth, Wuxi has been dubbed the "little Shanghai".
Wuxi has a population of nearly 6.4 million; it has nine universities / technical colleges, and eight high schools.
Currently Wuxi is designated an 'investment grade city', and has two large industrial parks devoted to new industry.
While current manufacturing centres on textiles, there are projects to move to clean technology, electric motor manufacturing and software development. Most recently Wuxi has become the solar technology hub of China - with Suntech Power (the world's largest manufacture of photovoltaic cells) and Jetion Holdings Ltd based there.
According to most recent figures (2002) 24% of economic activity is textile trade, and another 25% is industrial based manufacturing, including motors, molds and casting, with another 8% being light industry.
A growing proportion of the economy is derived from tourism.
Wuxi is one of the top business cities in China. According to Forbes ranking, Wuxi is in the third position for best business cities in Mainland China in 2008.
Our Agreement
Frankston City Council and the Wuxi Municipal People's Government agreed to establish a relationship that is based upon "the economic cooperation and bilateral trade, enhance bilateral exchange and cooperation in the fields of Social affairs, Culture, Tourism, Education - especially in vocational education, high school exchange and building of liveable cities, etc."
The Agreement in Practice
Since the Sister City agreement was signed in October 2011, Council and the community have been working on a wide array of activities, including:
- Establishing sister school relationships
- Strengthening the inter-city tourism opportunities
- Increasing awareness of opportunities for Frankston City to become more of an investment destination for solar energy generation
- Improving awareness of export trade opportunities for Frankston City businesses and grant opportunities provided by other tiers of Government
