Work Ready Program
Locals are gaining the skills and experience they need to have rewarding careers thanks to Frankston Council’s Work Ready Program.
The program is in its fourth year and is continuing to grow and provide invaluable work experience placements for secondary and tertiary students, along with traineeships and apprenticeships to local young people.
The Work Ready Program supports a range of initiatives that assist young people in being equipped with work ready skills. It consists of work experience program for secondary students, placements for tertiary students, structured workplace learning for VCAL students, school-based apprenticeships, Traineeships and Apprenticeships. Participants of the program will gain structured work experience, training, buddying, mentoring and for traineeships and apprenticeships a qualification.
A total of 80 young people have been provided the opportunity to participate in the program since the implementation in 2019. Of the 80 placements, 29 students have been placed in the 2024 calendar year providing evidence of substantial improvement.
Student placements have been supported within various council departments:

- Meals on Wheels
- Youth Support
- Frankston Arts Centre
- Mechanic Workshop

- People and Culture

- Customer Service
- Urban Design

Work Experience - How to apply
Council understands and recognises the importance of Work Experience and Students Placements and the benefits they provide to both the student and Council. Our Program helps students meet their educational requirements and enhance their skills and knowledge, while being exposed to a real working environment. Students are placed within Council primarily to observe and learn rather than undertake activities which require extensive training or experience.
To be eligible to undertake Work Experience students must:
- be at least 15 years of age.
- have a requirement as part of their studies to undertake a period of Work Experience.
- provide Council with at least five (5) weeks’ notice of your interest in undertaking Work Experience or Placement

Applicants should note that while every effort is made to place students, we may not be able to accommodate all students. Priority is given to students who are currently living and/or studying within the Frankston municipality.

Student Placement - How to apply
Council provides tertiary students (students enrolled in TAFE, Colleges, and schools for students with disabilities, and Universities) with work placements relevant to their area of study to ensure that students meet their specific educational requirements.
To be eligible to undertake Student Placement, students must:
- be at least 15 years of age.
- have a requirement as part of their studies to undertake a period of Work Experience.
- have a current Working with Children Check (for students over 18).
- provide Council with at least five (5) weeks’ notice of your interest in undertaking Work Experience or Placement

Apprenticeship/Traineeships
In addition to work experience and student placements the Work Ready Program provides employment and training opportunities for people wanting to build a career. Apprenticeships and Traineeships offer invaluable work experience, enabling the participant to develop skills in a work-based environment and receive a qualification. The program builds the job readiness of the participants and empowers them to contribute to the important work of the council. The program is designed for school leavers or adults entering the workforce.
Eligibility criteria for Traineeships:
- living with a disability,
- identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander,
- People unable to find suitable employment, and
- People who may be experiencing hardship.
Please note the following conditions when applying for a Traineeship:
- The position is available for twelve-months only,
- Positions are open to residents of Frankston City
- Employment at Frankston City Council is conditional upon having the right to work in Australia, a valid Working with Children’s Check and Police Check. Evidence will be required.
