Helping Victorians to reduce household energy and save

The Victorian Government recently announced it will invest $797 million to help Victorian’s reduce their energy bills and make their homes more energy efficient. It is called Victoria’s Household Energy Saving Package and it includes:

·    Energy efficient heating and cooling – $335.5 million over 4 years to provide heating and cooling upgrades to low income and vulnerable households.

·    Energy efficiency upgrades for social housing properties – $112 million to improve the energy efficiency of 35,000 social housing properties. This includes upgrades to insulation, draught sealing and installing energy efficient heating, cooling and hot water appliances.

·    $250 Power Saving Bonus for concession card holders – from 1 February 2021 until 31 January 2022 a one-off $250 Power Saving Bonus is available to eligible households to assist with paying their energy bills. 

·    Expanding the Victorian Energy Upgrades program – $14 million for expanding the program, providing households and businesses with discounted energy efficient products and services for major appliance upgrades, replacing gas appliances with efficient electric alternatives and much more.

·    Improving energy efficiency standards for new homes – $5.9 million to raise the energy efficiency standard for new homes to a new 7-star level through changes to the National Construction Code.

·    Minimum energy efficiency standards for rented homes to improve the comfort of an estimated 350,000 renters who struggle with energy costs trying to maintain the comfort of their homes during summer and winter.

·    Expanding the existing Solar Homes program – $191 million to help more Victorians, including households and business, get solar and batteries.
