A $1.2 million boost for local bowls

Belvedere Bowls Club members can’t wipe the smiles from their faces after Frankston City Council backed a major $1.2 million clubhouse refurbishment.

Councillors voted recently to award a contract to Bowden Corporation Pty Ltd for works including:

  • Demolition of an existing single storey office building on the site
  • Extension of the existing single storey clubroom building for new amenities including a storeroom, bar, cleaner’s room, match committee room, entry foyer and office
  • Refurbishment of the existing kitchen and pantry; and
  • Alterations to the existing car park

Mayor Kris Bolam said the much needed upgrade would provide modern facilities that are accessible, inclusive and fit for purpose.

“The Belvedere bowlers love their sport and use the three greens for competition four days a week during Pennant season and three days a week during the off season.

“The greens are also used for training and social play on most days of the week.”

Club board member and groundskeeper Rod Atherton said members were excited about the refurbishment.

“It will be fantastic to get it going. It’s a big project,” he said.

Mr Atherton said the refurbishment would give the club a huge boost and demonstrated the Council’s commitment to bowls.

“Bowling is popular and this will provide room for future growth,” he said.

The Mayor also noted that simple pleasures, such as participating in your favourite sport, go a long way toward recovering from the social impacts of COVID-19.

“Restrictions have meant that many residents, particularly our senior residents, have been unable to socialise or remain active over the past eight months.

“It’s a great to know that not only will members once again be able to take to the green, they’ll also have a new clubhouse to be proud of,” said the Mayor.

The Belvedere Bowls Club is based at East Rd, Seaford, and caters for about 190 members.

Its current facilities include a social room, kitchen, office space and several storage sheds.

Belvedere Bowls Club was created following the amalgamation in 2016 of Frankston RSL and Seaford Bowls Clubs.

It became evident that the facility at East Rd, formerly Seaford Bowls Club, was no longer functional or fit for purpose following the merger, hence the major refurbishment.

The works are due to be completed by June, 2021.
