Are you ready to take on the Mayor’s Reading Challenge?

Frankston City Libraries invites preschool age children (0-5 years) and their families to sign up for the Mayor’s Reading Challenge.

According to Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer, the challenge is not only fun, it creates positive outcomes for early literacy.

“Australian research has found that children who are read to six or seven times a week have a literacy level almost a year ahead of children who are not read to at home and are likely to learn more when they start school,” said the Mayor.

“The Mayor’s Reading Challenge is a great opportunity to read to kids and collect some pretty cool prizes along the way.

“Everyone who completes the challenge of reading 60 books receives a free book and goes into the draw to win one of three Robinsons Bookshop vouchers.”

The Mayor’s Reading Challenge aims to make reading a fun experience. You can include books, magazines, rhymes and songs in your child’s reading record.

“We encourage parents to make reading interesting by not only reading children’s books but sharing what you enjoy. You could read snippets of your favourite magazine or newspaper out loud, point out road signs or sing nursery rhymes together,” added the Mayor. 

“Don’t forget that when you join Frankston City Libraries, you have free access to the great kids reading apps, Tumble Books and Story Box Library. There are great children’s books on our BorrowBox and CloudLibrary apps as well. If you’re not a member it’s easy to join online.

“Of course our Storytime Live sessions each Tuesday and Thursday at 11am on the Frankston City Libraries Facebook page also count towards your tally.”

In its tenth year, the Mayor’s Reading Challenge supports early literacy development, by challenging parents and carers to engage in regular reading experiences with their children in a fun and rewarding way.

The Mayor’s Reading Challenge runs throughout August and participants can register online at the Frankston City Libraries website.

After a month of happy reading, children collect a reading rewards pack, including a certificate signed by the Mayor. The reading rewards pack will be available for collection when the library branches re-open.
