Community’s vision for 2040 takes shape
Published on 04 December 2020
More than 450 people shared their aspirations for Frankston City’s future through engagement activities, including a survey and online workshops, conducted by Council in August and September.
Responses covering the City’s attributes and ways it could be improved, will be used to create the Community Vision 2040.
Frankston City Councillor, Sue Baker, thanked everyone who had participated in the extensive consultation process so far.
“People who live, work and play locally told us they value our natural assets, including the coastline and green open spaces and want to ensure they are preserved for future generations.
“Likewise, participants appreciate our vibrant lifestyle, having shopping, services and recreation facilities close by, as well as the sense of community, social connection and safety Frankston City offers,” Cr Baker said.
“They also shared their desire to build on these attributes with an even more connected community that is diverse, welcoming and inclusive, including through the creation of a signature City Centre,” she added.
A newly formed community panel will now draw on their wide breadth of experiences and backgrounds to provide their input into the development of the draft vision.
The panel was formed by an independent consultant, focussed on including a diverse cross-section of residents, who met for the first time on Saturday 21 November.
Long-time Frankston City resident and panellist, Kamlesh, said the group’s first meeting was well organised and informative.
“Everyone respected each other’s options and paused for each other’s time which was amazing for me.”
Fellow panellist, Ethan agreed, saying he enjoyed the first meeting and getting to know the other members who shared a passion for improving the community.
“I have a disability and I have friends who live in the Frankston area who have a disability and I wanted to advocate for myself and my friends to make sure our voices are heard.”
Cr Baker said the City had much to look forward to over the next 20 years.
“It is exciting to see our community’s vision starting to come together. It will be drawn on during planning and decision making, to shape our shared future, including during the development of the next Council Plan.”
A Community Vision is a requirement of the Local Government Act 2020 and provides Council a great opportunity to engage broadly and deeply with the community.
The draft Frankston City 2040 Community Vision will be presented for public consultation in April 2021.
