Council welcomes funding to local roads and pedestrian safety

Vital intersection upgrades and pedestrian operated signals will be installed to improve road and pedestrian safety at three locations across Frankston City thanks to almost $2 million in Federal Government funding.

The funding includes $743,911 to improve pedestrian safety at McCormicks Road in Carrum Downs, $788,000 towards O’Gradys Road and Frankston-Dandenong Road intersection in Carrum Downs, and $198,000 towards McClelland Drive and Skye Road intersection in Langwarrin.

Frankston City Mayor Sandra Mayer thanked the Federal Government for their financial contributions, saying “this is welcome news for commuters travelling along these roads, making the journey for hundreds of people safer and quicker.”

“Council is humbled to announce that the dangerous pedestrian crossing located on McCormicks Road in Carrum Downs, which devastatingly claimed the life of local resident Phyllis Miles in July 2019, will receive the vital safety improvements required thanks to Federal Government funding.”

“Council has worked with local residents and the Department of Transport to implement pedestrian operated signals while replacing the refuge island which will immediately improve safety while lowering vehicle speeds.”

Local residents Amanda Cox and Michael Miles headed a petition to Council and local Members of Parliament for pedestrian safety improvements following the tragic accident in a bid to honour their loved and deeply missed Aunt and God Mother (to Amanda) and Grandmother (to Michael).

“Losing such an important person in our lives really made us feel compelled to do something that would protect other families from ever having to experience what our family has experienced,” said Amanda.

“Being able to honour the memory of my loving and caring God Mother who leaves such a big hole in our hearts is something I know she would support and be proud we’ve been able to achieve after a little over a year of fierce lobbying.”

“Michael and I want to thank Council, particularly Manager of Engineering Services Doug Dickins, Sonya Kilkenny and Peta Murphy for supporting us to achieve this outcome.”

Mayor Sandra Mayer also added her appreciation to local representatives Sonya Kilkenny (Member for Carrum), Peta Murphy (Federal Member for Dunkley) and Senator David Van (Liberal Patron for Dunkley) for supporting these projects.

“It is fantastic to see all three levels of government working together alongside the local community, particularly Amanda and Michael, to achieve important investment to improve our community’s safety and journey through these vital road upgrades.”
