Detox your home this New Year

While many are inspired to detox their body in the New Year, it is also a great time to cleanse the family home of unwanted chemicals.

Frankston City residents are encouraged to participate in this year’s Detox Your Home event, which provides a safe, free and easy way for residents to drop off common household chemicals without harming their health or the environment.

The free household chemical collection day is coming to Frankston City on Saturday 1 February 2020, 8am-3pm.

Frankston City Council, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is encouraging residents to take the opportunity to get rid of unwanted – and potentially dangerous items – such as pesticides, detergents and weed killers.

Frankston City Council Mayor, Sandra Mayer said common household chemicals could harm family members, pets, add fuel to house fires, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment.

“If you put chemicals out with the regular rubbish collection, they could explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals,” Cr Mayer said.

“Pouring chemicals down the drain is also very dangerous and can pollute the waterways, even contaminating the drinking water supply or making rivers and beaches unsuitable for swimming.

“Luckily, detoxing your home will be easy on February 1 and now is a great time to start thinking about the chemicals you would like to get rid of.”

The 2019 Detox Your Home event was attended by 326 households, with 6.8 tonnes of chemical products diverted from landfill.
