Energy efficient LEDs to replace fluorescent street lights
Published on 04 September 2020
Frankston City Council will begin upgrading 7000 fluorescent street lights with energy efficient LEDs in November this year.
Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer, said the project was a key action towards reducing Council’s greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Towards Zero Emissions Plan (2019-2023).
“Council declared a climate emergency late last year and this project will reduce emissions by as much as removing 110 cars from the road each year,” Cr Mayer said.
“I am really proud we are taking this step in significantly reducing our carbon footprint, as we progress towards our target of zero net emissions by 2025.”
The LEDs are up to 53 per cent more efficient than the lights they are replacing and the project is expected to save Council over $2.6 million over the life of the light fittings.
“This will allow us to direct more resources into other community services, providing more value for money for ratepayers,” Cr Mayer said.
In addition, the LED lights will provide better lighting outcomes through:
- Greater uniformity of light across and along the street
- Better colour and visibility
- Less loss of brightness over time
- Less glare
- Greater reliability
- Lower maintenance costs.
The new lights have a longer life and are expected to last up to 20 years. The old lights will be deconstructed and recycled.
Cr Mayer said during the rollout, residents would be able to visit Council’s website and see when installation was expected in their suburbs.
“The changeover may be impacted by weather and other factors but at this stage the project should be completed in June 2021.
“It will take less than five minutes to replace a street light so any disruptions, including to traffic flow, should not last long and residents’ and visitors’ cars can remain parked on the streets.”
Ironbark Sustainability is managing the project and installation contractor on behalf of Council and will continue liaising with officers throughout the rollout.
