Extra bins and bin collections in place for Frankston City beaches

Frankston City Council doubled the frequency of its beach litter bin collection and installed additional temporary bins prior to Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup public holiday.
Council CEO, Phil Cantillon, said the unprecedented number of people who flocked to the City’s beaches on Tuesday (3 November), meant the most frequented bins filled quickly between the twice daily collections, while others, only a short walk away, remained under capacity.
“We upgraded our service last weekend, as we do each year during the warmer months, but it was tested on Tuesday, with large numbers of people heading to the beaches to enjoy the warmest Cup Day in many years,” Mr Cantillon said.
“Victorians are being encouraged to enjoy their downtime outdoors, having more picnics and can now travel further and take advantage of our beautiful beaches.
“Unfortunately this meant that we saw a lot of litter piled up on and around the most accessible bins, generally located at prominent foreshore entry points.”
Mr Cantillon said he appreciated that beachgoers had attempted to dispose of their rubbish in the right way and officers resolved the problem as part of their daily collection schedule.
“The nearest bins to the beach tend to attract the most rubbish but there are also bins located on the walkways to our carparks.
“If you can’t access these bins when you’re leaving the foreshore, please take your waste home and dispose of it in your household bins, for kerbside collection.
“We will continue to monitor and adapt our service as we to move into the summer months.”
Mr Cantillon added that Council was committed to protecting the City’s unique, coastal environment and to empowering the community to reduce waste.
“We know our community loves our beaches as much as we do and we all have a role to play in ensuring they are free of rubbish.”
