Have your say on the Sandfield Reserve Skatepark upgrade

Sandfield Reserve Skate Park in Carrum Downs is set to undergo a major revamp and Frankston City Council is asking the community what they think of the proposed design.

As part of the consultation process so far, Carrum Downs Secondary students and avid BMX riders, Storm Ashby and Blake Thornell have contributed their ideas for the upgrade.

Last week, the duo met with skate park designer, Darren White and builder, Steve Kelly, as well as Council and State Government representatives at Café 263.

Storm and Blake were excited to see their ideas brought to life in concept drawings and 3D digital impressions.

Storm said the upgrade would suit a new age of riders and skaters.

“There’s more flow now and we go higher and faster, so this will be way better.”

Mr White said safety was an important consideration in creating the park’s design because it would be used by children on scooters as well as more experienced skaters and riders.

The project was funded through the State Government Community Support Fund, after fellow Carrum Downs Secondary Students, Lachlan Gray-Kelly and Noah Douglas contacted Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny.

“Our mates talked to local MP Sonya Kilkenny about getting some money to update the park, which is pretty awesome,” Blake said.

Frankston City Council Mayor, Sandra Mayer, said the initiative shown by the students was impressive.

“It is great that the young people in our city are taking pride in the community and sharing ideas for the things they would like to see improved,” Cr Mayer said.

“I’d like to thank the State Government for funding this project and I’m really proud that we’ve all been able to work together to see the plans through to this stage.

“Now we would love to hear what others in the community think about the design.”
