Positive self-talk is key to feeling good in tough times

To give the community a much needed boost during lockdown, Council staff will share positive affirmation messages on social media for the next four weeks.

As part of the Feel Good Frankston Project officers will post pictures of themselves holding signs featuring the affirmations on Council’s community Facebook pages, in the hope of promoting positive self-talk.

Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer, said Council hoped the project would raise awareness of the impact positive self-talk has on our ability to cope with difficult situations.

“Repeating a positive phrase or thinking kind thoughts about yourself, will help you feel better over time and empower you to face the challenges in your life.”

The Mayor said the project was created by Council’s Neighbourhood Development team, who were missing connecting with residents face-to-face.

“Our officers are interacting with community members all the time and have heard many stories of people dealing with unique challenges brought about by the pandemic.

“As they can’t support residents in person like they usually would, our staff are hoping to engage using powerful word phrases to communicate messages of strength and connection.”

The Mayor encouraged residents to get involved by commenting on the photos or by posting their own affirmations, using the hashtag #FeelGoodFrankston.

“You can choose your own affirmation or search online for one you like. This is a simple way to connect with each other while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

“Being kind to yourself is therapeutic and sharing these messages means they can benefit other people as well.”

The project is being piloted for four weeks and sample affirmation statements are below. For more ideas and to get involved visit Council’s Facebook page or search: #FeelGoodFrankston on Facebook.
