Rubbish truck man delights his biggest fan

Friday is three-year-old Joey Turton’s favourite day of the week because the household bins are emptied in his Carrum Downs street.

Joey is a rubbish truck enthusiast. He is the proud owner of his own toy fleet of trucks, as well as all the bins they need and books on his favourite topic.

Every Friday Joey waits for the familiar sound of the truck pulling into his street and without fail, truck driver Andy Dickson, makes Joey’s day with a wave, beep and a smile.

Sharing in Andy’s kindness has become a silver lining for Joey and his mum, Katherine, during lockdown.

“I’m a hairdresser so I haven’t been able to go in to work and Joey isn’t at childcare so this has become our favourite day of the week.

“As soon as Joey hears the truck coming around it is on! We run out to see the truck and it makes my day to see how happy he is.

“I’m pretty sure it makes the driver’s day too!”

Andy has been driving for Solo for two years and said community spirit was vital during challenging times.

“I love to see the reaction on a child’s face with a simple wave and a beep,” Andy said.

“We are all going through a difficult times, it’s a simple gesture and it’s always easier to smile than frown.”

Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer, said simple acts of kindness, like Andy’s, are helping people feel less isolated and more optimistic during lockdown.

“I’d like to thank our Waste Management team and the terrific drivers who have continued delivering this vital service throughout the pandemic.

“They go above and beyond each week and have been delivering a little positivity throughout the City too.”

The Mayor also reminded families to keep a safe distance back from the road when watching trucks collect the household bins.

Since a video of Joey greeting the truck was shared on Council’s Facebook page other parents have told stories of enjoying this ritual with their children and of the friendly truck drivers who make them smile.

Katherine thanked Andy for taking the time to wave and beep for Joey each week.

“Thank you for helping to brighten our day. It means more than you know.”
