Advocacy win for Frankston City with major road upgrades

Frankston City Council’s continued advocacy has secured major wins for the community, with anticipated delivery timetables now received for three significant road projects.
Mayor Kris Bolam said the road upgrade projects are a welcome improvement for the community, adding: “Hall Road and Lathams Road are major roads that move a large amount of heavy traffic. We’ve been advocating hard to the State and Federal Governments for these works to deliver safer, quality roads for our community.”
Council has welcomed Federal Government funding of $4.25 million for major renewal works along Hall Road, Carrum Downs, with works funded from Phase 2 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Mayor Bolam said: “The much needed rehabilitation works include road surfacing along both carriage ways of Hall Road, between Frankston-Dandenong Road and Rowellyn Avenue.”
North East Ward Cr Suzette Tayler added: “We look forward to these works providing a smoother flow of traffic and access to local residences and businesses. We welcome infrastructure upgrades with safer pavements and stormwater drainage upgrades.”
The program of works are scheduled to commence by November 2021.
Senator for Victoria David Van said he is pleased that through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, the Morrison Government has been able to fund this critical road renewal project in Carrum Downs.
Senator Van said: “The Federal Government’s funding of $4.25 million will allow for better travel times in the Cranbourne and Carrum Downs area. The works will also improve traffic flow and allow for better access to local facilities and streets through dedicated turning lanes. The works will also make it easier to cycle and walk along Hall Road.
“With the installation of both centre median and kerb side safety barriers, this will reduce the risk of traffic accidents along this stretch of road. I look forward to seeing these works getting started,” Senator Van said.
In addition to Council’s Hall Road renewal project, $80 million of works is being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria along Lathams Road, with major works starting in late 2021. Upgrades include an additional lane in each direction between Oliphant Way and Frankston – Dandenong Road, intersection upgrades and the installation of safety barriers. Early works are about to start on construction of a new bridge over Peninsula Link. The project is due for completion in mid-2023.
Site investigation works are also underway for a $282.5 million duplication of Hall Road from the Westernport Highway to east of the McCormicks Road intersection, jointly funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments. Construction is expected to commence mid-2022 and be completed by early 2025.
The project will add an extra lane in each direction between McCormicks Road and Western Port Highway, intersection upgrades, new walking and cycling paths along Hall Road between McCormicks Road and Western Port Highway and installation of a centre median and kerb-side safety barriers between McCormicks Road and Western Port Highway.
Mayor Bolam said: “Council is committed to doing everything possible so Frankston City can achieve its vision as a vibrant place to live, work, study and travel to now and into the future.
“Council-led advocacy to State and Federal Governments is a vital tool for achieving vital funding to drive change and deliver positive community outcomes.
“We look forward to the completion of these major road upgrades for the long term benefit of our community and the local economy.”
