Frankston City Libraries invites children aged 0-5 years and their families to get involved with this year’s Mayor’s Reading Challenge.
In its eleventh year, the Mayor’s Reading Challenge supports early literacy development, by encouraging parents and carers to engage in regular reading experiences with their children in a fun and rewarding way.
According to Frankston City Mayor, Kris Bolam, the challenge is not only fun, it creates positive literacy outcomes for young children.
“Australian research has found that children who are read to six or seven times a week have a literacy level almost a year ahead of children who are not read to at home, and tend to learn more when they start school,” the Mayor said.
“The Mayor’s Reading Challenge is a great opportunity to read to kids and collect some pretty cool prizes along the way.
“Everyone who completes the challenge of 60 books receives a free book and goes into the draw to win one of the major prizes.”
The Mayor’s Reading Challenge aims to make reading a fun experience.
“We encourage parents to make reading interesting by not only sharing children’s books but materials you enjoy. You could read snippets of your favourite magazine or newspaper out loud, point out road signs or sing nursery rhymes,” added the Mayor.
The books read in your regular Storytime sessions with Kerry, Monica and Bev all count towards the Challenge, as do any of the books you enjoy via Story Box Libraries or Tumblebooks, both free with your Frankston City Libraries membership.
The Mayor’s Reading Challenge runs throughout August and participants can register via the Frankston City Libraries website, by dropping into the Frankston, Seaford or Carrum Downs libraries or by visiting the Council Customer Service Centre at Langwarrin. Reading records can be downloaded from the website or collected from any of the above locations.
After a month of happy reading, children collect a reading rewards pack, including a certificate signed by the Mayor and a new board book.
