Frankston City honours and acknowledges our COVID-19 heroes

Council is honouring Frankston City’s selfless heroes who stood tall during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Kris Bolam said to pay tribute to those who have done us all proud during these challenging times more than 60 organisations, which have supported our community throughout the pandemic, will receive COVID Hero scrolls to honour their contribution.

In addition to the scrolls, COVID Hero flags will fly in prominent locations across Frankston City including the Civic Centre, Frankston Arts Centre and Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre.

Mayor Bolam said: “The past 18 months is a period that none of us will ever forget – a global pandemic, restrictions, lockdowns and significant economic consequences. But in Frankston City there’s been a shining light – our compassionate and ever reliable COVID Heroes.

“Through it all our COVID Heroes have been like a shining beacon of hope and inspiration, providing vital support when our community needed it most. Our COVID heroes went ‘above and beyond’ in exceptionally difficult circumstances, giving Frankston City residents a remarkable example of the true meaning of community spirit,” the Mayor said.

Mayor Bolam added: “We all know that Frankston City has the best beaches and facilities. But we’ve also got the best people and the dedication of our COVID heroes is an ongoing testament to that.

“When the going got tough, our heroes rose to the top and helped to keep us all safe. On behalf of the Frankston City community, Council and myself personally, I extend a heartfelt thank you – you’ve done us all proud.”

The State Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke MP, also paid tribute to our COVID heroes: “Whatever the crisis, the community members of Frankston punch well above their weight when called on to help.

“Whether it be assisting other communities in their time of need during fires and floods, or local families during COVID19, I am excited to see some of Frankston’s finest, who go above and beyond for our community, appropriately acknowledged as heroes,” Mr Edbrooke said.

The Federal Member for Dunkley, Peta Murphy, said: “We thank those terrific individuals and organisations who have gone above and beyond to keep our community safe over the past 18 months. I’m proud to help put a spotlight on some of their incredible work and service that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.”

The flags and scrolls feature the iconic COVID tribute created by prominent street artists Brigitte Dawson and Melissa Turner from Melbourne’s Murals.

Frankston City Council is dedicated to supporting our community with a wide range of supports and initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Council has committed a total of $9,128,000 towards the Covid-19 Relief and Recovery Package. This was initially $5,268,000 at June 30, 2021 and then boosted by $3,860,000 in the 2021–2025 Council Plan and Budget. Support includes business, community recovery and artist grants, to name a few. Frankston City Council is directly supporting many local charities and not-for-profits with additional funding, to help them continue providing vital assistance during the pandemic.

This is in addition to extra funding for critical Council-run supports, including the Community Recovery Call Centre and Meals on Wheels service.
