Frankston City’s young artists thrive with support from Council

Frankston City’s young artists and performers will showcase their talents at McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery on Friday 16 April.
The Thrive Market and Variety Show will immerse lovers of emerging culture in art, music and performance in the Gallery’s Pavilion room between 5.30pm and 8.30pm.
Proudly supported by Frankston City Council’s Youth Services Team, the market and variety show is the first event of the year to be organised and run via the Frankston FReeZA Program.
Artists under 25 were selected through an application process with a wide variety of styles supported in the final line-up.
Event manager Eliza Scott said patrons can expect mesmerising performances by young musicians, dancers and acrobats, and an array of stalls featuring photography, paintings and other artworks.
“The acrobats have a slow, controlled aesthetic rather than crazy tricks and flips – it looks absolutely stunning,” Ms Scott said.
Three musicians will be featured, with styles including folk acoustic, rock/musical theatre, and a vocalist Ms Scott describes as “modern/dark”.
Dancers from the Spark Youth Dance Company, whose works are designed and performed by artists under 25, will bring their unique vibe.
The evening will also include the showing of a short horror/comedy film entitled Harvest.
FReeZA is a State Government initiative that supports young Victorians to get involved in their community by planning and running drug, alcohol and smoke-free events for other young people.
As part of the Frankston FReeZA Program, the Fresh Entertainment Committee is active in event management, promotion and design, production and sound production – supported by mentoring and Council’s Youth Services Team.
Committee member, Ms Scott, thanked the McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery for hosting the Thrive Market and Variety Show.
“This is so diverse and to have the authority and agency to go and do all of the things that need to be done is really exciting,” she said.
South Ward Cr Liam Hughes encourages young people to attend the market and variety show and enjoy the talent of their peers.
“I’m a big supporter of the Frankston FReeZA Program because it gives the community a chance to see just how talented our young people are,” he said.
“The Thrive Market and Variety Show looks set to be a memorable evening and hopefully the start of long careers for some of these artists.
“I know a lot of good young musicians missed out on selection for this event but I’d encourage them to stay in touch with the Committee and our Youth Services Team because there’s always something going on.”
Cr Hughes said he was particularly looking forward to a compilation album release later in the year that would be recorded following applications and selection of local young artists.
Thrive Market and Variety Show tickets $10 (with under 12s free) will be reimbursed with vouchers on entry at the market stalls. A free shuttle bus will be operating from Frankston CBD.
