Frankston’s first augmented reality scavenger hunt
Published on 18 November 2021
The streets of Frankston will come to life this month with the launch of the City’s first augmented reality (AR) scavenger hunt, ‘ENCOUNTER – beyond the wall’.
Mayor Kris Bolam said the exciting initiative, featuring AR, is thanks to funding from Council with an additional $40,000 from the State Government as part of the Suburban Revitalisation Program.
“As we emerge from lockdown, this is a great initiative to draw visitors back to the City centre, celebrate Frankston’s ongoing transformation and showcase our growing retail and hospitality experiences,” the Mayor said.
South Ward Cr Liam Hughes added: “ENCOUNTER will have visitors ducking through lanes ways and exploring parts of the City they may not have seen before to learn about Frankston’s history, see crisp new street art and explore its vibrant cafe scene.”
The State Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke MP, said: “I’m a huge supporter of any plan to draw visitors back to our City centre to celebrate its ongoing transformation and lift our local economy.
“I jumped at the chance to partner in this project with Frankston Council, which showcases our growing retail and hospitality experiences to the nation in such an innovative way,” Mr Edbrooke said.
There are seven locations to be found, including public spaces and businesses, revealing new and existing artworks in a trail, which will take around 60 minutes to complete.
Participating businesses are offering special deals for those who visit their venues and anyone who locates all seven artworks can enter the Lucky Prize Draw to win $500 worth of local vouchers.
Cr Hughes said: “Street art is a centrepiece to the City’s tourism positioning. Driven by the annual Big Picture Fest (scheduled to return in March 2022) there are now over 30 amazing artworks, each an epic display of colour creatively and movement.
“The murals harness the City’s diverse urban culture creating a multi-layered arts destination for visitors and residents to explore.
“Our streets and laneways all have secrets to reveal. It’s now time to ENCOUNTER the unexpected in Frankston City. Head into the city centre, download the ‘EyeJack’ app and commence your ENCOUNTER.
“Watch the artwork come to life, amplified with music and movement. DISCOVER – PLAY – WIN. Check out what’s beyond the wall today,” Cr Hughes said.
The Hop Shop co-owner Ed Cox said: “Street art in Frankston is eclectic and ENCOUNTER will enable The Hop Shop to join in on the expanding tourism offering.
“Featuring AR and becoming a stop along this scavenger hunt route is exciting and will certainly bring a new flavour and audience to our business,” Mr Cox said.
