Newly elected South Ward Cr Liam Hughes has made history as both Victoria’s and Frankston City’s youngest ever elected councillor at 18 years.
A former Frankston High School student (Class of 2020), Cr Hughes celebrated his 19th birthday shortly after being sworn in as a Frankston City Councillor. When not addressing Council matters, he is aiming to become a Mechatronics Engineer.
Mayor Kris Bolam said Cr Hughes brought an important perspective to Council deliberations and commended his commitment.
“Frankston City Council is a welcoming and inclusive organisation – it’s wonderful to have Liam as a member of the team and importantly, represent young people.
“All organisations need revitalisation and to hear from a broad range of viewpoints. Liam’s election signals that our ratepayers – the people we’re here to represent – acknowledge and agree with that wholeheartedly. I’m looking forward to working with Liam and achieving the best outcomes for Frankston City,” the Mayor said.
Cr Bolam is in his second term of Mayor – having also served as Mayor in 2011 when he was 24 years old. At that time, Cr Bolam was one of the youngest Councillors ever to have been appointed to the position of Mayor in Victoria and remains the youngest appointed Mayor in Frankston City’s history.
Cr Hughes said his priorities as a councillor include providing a voice for young people; working hard to improve the cleanliness of Frankston’s streets, gateway entry points and open spaces; and ensuring Council is doing its duty to provide excellent service at all times to ratepayers.
“I may be the youngest councillor in Victoria’s history, but I do not see it as something remarkable. My aim is not to make headlines, but to represent Frankston City as a place where people love to live,” Cr Hughes said.
