A memorial for Cameron Smith featuring a plaque and bench seat will be installed at Station St, Seaford, with support from the State Member for Carrum, Sonya Kilkenny MP, and Frankston City Council.
Council recently voted to approve an application from Ms Kilkenny to install the memorial in Station St to remember Mr Smith, who was tragically killed in December 2020.
Mr Smith’s family will donate the bench seat, Ms Kilkenny will fund the plaque and Council will fund and complete retaining wall modifications to enable the installation.
Ms Kilkenny said: “Cam’s father, Michael, reached out to me about a permanent memorial for Cam – somewhere to sit and reflect on a young life cut short and somewhere to sit and reflect on the preciousness of life.
“Council has been very supportive and I want to thank Frankston Council for taking this next step in approving the installation of a plaque together with a memorial seat which Cam’s former boss Toby Kennedy and Cam’s workmates would like to make and donate.
“I know this memorial is important not only for Cam’s family but for the Seaford community as well who want to show their support and compassion for this family and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” Ms Kilkenny said.
Ms Kilkenny and Council will work together to secure State Government funding to assist with funding installation of the memorial.
Mayor Kris Bolam said the Council was dedicated to working with Mr Smith’s family and Ms Kilkenny to establish the memorial for Mr Smith.
“Our community was distressed and saddened by the death of Mr Smith following an incident in Seaford.
“Council will liaise with Ms Kilkenny to install the memorial in line with the wishes of Mr Smith’s family,” Mayor Bolam said.
Mayor Bolam added the Council is also dedicated to working in partnership with agencies including Public Transport Victoria and Victoria Police to address the anti-social behaviour which has been taking place at Frankston City’s coastal suburbs, including Seaford.
“The safety of those who live in, and visit, these residential areas is our priority, which is why we have increased beach patrols, supported Victoria Police’s Operation Summer Safe and have installed 31 additional CCTV cameras across the City, including in the Seaford area,” Mayor Bolam said.
The Mayor added that part of January’s midyear Budget includes expanding the CCTV network in areas such as the Seaford foreshore.
“We understand there is more to be done and will continue to introduce further safety measures in collaboration with the police and the community,” Mayor Bolam said.
