New Accessible Parking Permit Scheme now live

Published on 23 March 2021

The Victorian Government has introduced a new disability parking permit scheme known as the Accessible Parking Permit (APP) Scheme.

The APP Scheme will standardise permits to better align with the Australian Disability Parking Scheme (ADPS), making sure Victorian permits are recognised across the country.

Frankston City Councillor, David Asker, said the new online service, which launched yesterday (Monday 22 March) would provide community members with an easier, streamlined application process.

“The new system will make the application and assessment process fairer, simpler and consistent across the state.

“It will also reduce the misuse of permits because under the new system, they’re more secure and harder to duplicate,” Cr Asker said.

The double time (green permit) will remain, allowing people with limited mobility additional time to park for double the time in a regular parking space.

The blue permit will be renamed the Australian Disability Parking Permit, to align with the ADPS. It will allow people who have been assessed as needing additional space (such as wheelchair users), to park in a disability parking bay.

“Permit holders assessed as having a condition or disability that permanently affects their mobility will no longer have to visit a medical practitioner to renew their permit and some permits will be valid for longer, meaning permit holders don’t need to reapply as often,” Cr Asker added.

VicRoads has been working closely with medical professionals, disability advocacy groups and local councils for 18 months in the development of the new APP scheme.

All existing permits will remain valid until their expiry date.
