Community to help shape kindergarten enrolment process

Frankston City Council is revisiting local council criteria used to determine which children have priority access to kindergarten during enrolment. Council are inviting the community to have their say on the current criteria, to help shape the kindergarten enrolment process.

All community-based kindergartens are required to participate in the kindergarten registration procedure, which follows both Victorian Government and local council protocols.

This consultation considers local council protocols, which apply when more eligible children are applying for a kindergarten service than there are places available.

Current local council protocols include:

If a child registers on time
If a child lives within the local area of the nominated kindergarten
If a child has had a sibling attend the kindergarten
If a child’s family members are Frankston City residents/ratepayers

While Council takes registrations and applies its own enrolment criteria, they don’t deliver the kindergarten program itself. The number of places available at each kindergarten is also based on what the service provider is licensed for.

“Kindergarten is an important step for young children, setting a strong foundation for their educational journey. Research shows that kindergarten improves children's health and well-being, helps them to develop strong social skills and encourages a love of learning,” said Frankston City Council Mayor Nathan Conroy.

“Consulting the community means better understanding the needs of our families. It ensures equity in access to education regardless of background,” said Mayor Conroy.
