Don’t waste it! Divert it – a smarter way for your household rubbish

Frankston City Council is calling on residents to join a panel to help decide whether to commit to advanced waste processing in Melbourne’s south-east.  

Council is yet to decide whether it will take part in a project with other south-east councils to deliver a regional advanced waste processing facility. The facility would process what’s left in residential garbage bins after diverting as much waste as possible as a community.  

According to the Victorian Government's Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group, advanced waste processing uses smart technologies that recover more resources, materials and/or energy from waste, compared to landfill.  

Mayor Nathan Conroy encouraged residents to not throw away the opportunity to shape the future of waste for Frankston City.  

“Most of our household rubbish ends up in a landfill site in Hampton Park and another one 80km away west of Melbourne. We are going to have a real issue on our hands when the Hampton Park site closes in around 3 years.  

“We, Council and the community, need to decide now whether advanced waste processing is the way to go,” Mayor Conroy said.  

North-West Ward Cr Sue Baker said residents can express interest in the community panel by joining Mini Frankston, Council’s community of residents.  

“Mini Frankston plays such an important role in giving us regular feedback on key projects and issues like this one.  

“I encourage residents aged 15 and over, from all backgrounds and suburbs to join and express interest,” Cr Baker said.

Chosen participants will need to commit to 2 x 2.5-hour online sessions on Tuesday 12 July and Tuesday 19 July. Each participant will be rewarded a $50 Prezzee voucher for their participation.
