Frankston City honours its amazing volunteers

Frankston City’s dedicated volunteers have been honoured and celebrated as part of National Volunteer Week.
Mayor Nathan Conroy said the volunteers displayed the true meaning of community spirit, adding: “National Volunteer Week (May 16 – 22) is a great opportunity to recognise those who give their time so generously to improve and enrich the lives of others.
“We have over 16,800 volunteers in Frankston City, who contribute more than 46,000 hours of their time each and every year to our community. It’s a remarkable contribution that is equal to $1.3 million worth of donated time annually.”
The Mayor presented Certificates of Appreciation to Frankston Visitor Information Centre volunteers at a ceremony, which was also attended by South Ward Cr Claire Harvey, at Frankston Arts Centre.
“Many of our Visitor Information Centre volunteers have been with us for years, including some from the first day we opened in 2007. They do an incredible job assisting visitors and locals, as well as promoting Frankston City and the region, and we couldn’t run the Visitor Information Centre without them,” he said.
Veteran Visitor Information Centre volunteer, Roy, said: “I love Frankston. It’s got so much to offer. There’s so many pluses.”
Roy has volunteered at the Centre since it opened. He received Frankston City’s Senior Citizen of the Year Award on Australia Day in 2017 to honour and acknowledge his stellar contribution to tourism development.
Fellow volunteer Julie added: “The Visitor Information Centre is a good place to be. It’s fantastic to tell people the wonderful things about Frankston and all the great things you can do.”
Mayor Conroy attended a separate function to honour and celebrate volunteers involved with Meals on Wheels, Planned Activity Group and Age Friendly Frankston Ambassador programs.
Council also hosted a Volunteering expo – introducing prospective volunteers to 23 organisations – as part of National Volunteer Week.
Mayor Conroy said: “There are many groups and programs in the Frankston City community who rely on the time and skills of volunteers to do the work they do.
“From providing Meals on Wheels to helping out with a local sporting club, and even in keeping our local beaches free from rubbish – we rely on the work of our volunteers to keep the city running.”

Mayor Conroy also announced that nominations are now open for the 2022 Frankston City Volunteer Awards – run annually by Impact Volunteering.
“I encourage you to nominate a special volunteer who is doing great things in our community in one of five categories – Service, Leadership, Initiative, Youth and Teamwork. Do you know an outstanding volunteer or community organisation in or serving the Frankston community who deserves to be recognised and celebrated?
“By nominating them you’ll be highlighting their great work and dedication as well as creating awareness of the fabulous community organisations out there,” the Mayor said.
