Frankston City hosts events for Reconciliation Week 2022

Frankston City will host events for this year’s Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), which has the theme ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’

This year’s Reconciliation Week theme calls on all Australians to Be Brave and engage in reconciliation, so we can Make Change for all Australians.

Join us at events including a flag raising ceremony, welcome to country and smoking ceremony at Nairm Marr Djambana, located on the north-western corner of Jubilee Park, Frankston, off Nursery Avenue on Friday, 27 May from 10am to 11.30am.

Nairm Marr Djambana will also host the free Bay Mob Expo featuring a bush tucker walk, meditation, hip hop crew, activities for children and more on Thursday, June 2 from 11am to 4pm.

Nairm Marr Djambana is a meeting place to provide opportunities to further advance and improve the health of Aboriginal people of all genders and ages. For more details, please visit https://www.djambana.org.au

Renowned Aboriginal singer/songwriter and proud Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta and Nari Nari man, Kutcha Edwards, will enthral audiences with his beautiful voice, charismatic stage presence and with a deeper understanding of the Australia’s first people.

His show at Frankston Arts Centre is arranged in sequences exploring Kutcha’s life through the themes of Country, Birth, Youth, Politics, Love, Culture, Healing and Hope. Each theme is bathed in individualised colours and enhanced by stunning projections that amplify the poignancy of Kutcha’s original songs and stories.

Kutcha will perform at Frankston Arts Centre on Wednesday, 1 June. For more information, please click here.

Mangkaja artists from the Fitzroy Valley region share stories of culture and identity through vibrant images and representations of country with a distinct use of colour and uninhibited style highlighted in recent high profile fashion collaborations.

Nairm Marr Djambana (Gathering by the Bay) Executive Board member Kerry Strickland said: “Nairm Marr Djambana would like to invite the Frankston community to our Reconciliation events.

“This year’s theme ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ is a challenge to all Australians – individuals, families, communities, organisations and government and tackle the unfinished business of Reconciliation,” Ms Strickland said.

Mayor Nathan Conroy said: “Frankston City Council is committed to working with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Traditional Custodians on our Reconciliation journey to build friendships, respect and opportunities.

“Through our Reconciliation Action Plan, we hope to work together to enhance the health, education and employment outcomes – working towards closing the gap between Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians,” the Mayor said.
