Let’s get the conversation going at Frankston City’s Chatty Cafes.

North West Ward Cr Sue Baker visited Karingal PLACE Neighbourhood Centre to launch the initiative, which involves a space to have a chat that may brighten someone's day.

Cr Baker said: “The Chatty Cafe initiative aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness by encouraging and creating opportunities for people to interact through conversation.

“The aim is to kick start conversations, get people chatting to increase social connections within a community and possibly reduce loneliness along the way.”

Cr Baker added that the Chatty Cafe, which will operate at Karingal PLACE on Wednesdays from 10am to noon, provides an open invitation for residents to get together and have a chat over a tea or coffee.

“Thanks to the Chatty Cafe initiative, connections and friendships are made – crucially, it provides a social outlet,” she said.

Council Coordinator Neighbourhood Inclusion, Fiona Cann, said isolation and loneliness are significant factors in society, and this was magnified by the COVID lockdowns.

“This initiative is important post COVID assisting people re-establishing connections and create new connections with their local community in a safe, warm, inclusive and welcoming space,” she said.

Ms Cann said that volunteers are needed to support the initiative, adding those interested can phone Karingal PLACE on 8786 6650 or email karingalplace@frankston.vic.gov.au for more information.

The Chatty Cafe initiative is also supported by Twisted Sista, Station St Mall, Frankston, and Rosie’s Cafe, Culcairn Drive, Frankston South. For more details, please visit https://chattycafeaustralia.org.au/
