Cr Sue Baker attends Mental Health Training

October is National Mental Health Month, an initiative of Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA), and World Mental Health Day is on 10 October. This year’s theme is “Building Resilience: Communities and Connections”, and Council’s Community Strengthening Team is dedicated to creating such an environment.

At Frankston City Council, we are building our community’s resilience through raising awareness and teaching people skills to support and assist others who may be struggling with their mental health.

Partnering with Australian Red Cross and Mental Health First Aid Australia, Council is offering FREE sessions from 90-minute introductory webinars, half day workshops and two-day accredited Mental Health First Aid Training.

Here are the Mental Health sessions being offered for the remainder of the year:

  • 90-minute Online Introduction to Mental Health webinars: 6.30pm-8pm, Wednesday 12 October or Wednesday, 26 October. Book here: introduction to mental-health-training
  • Two-day Mental Health First Aid training at 21 Playne Street Frankston on (1) Monday, 7 and 14 November from 10am to 4pm; (2) Thursday, 24 and 1 December, from 10am to 4pmFor bookings, email communitystrengthening@frankston.vic.gov.au
  • Half-day Red Cross Mental Health Matters workshop at Ebdale Community Hub (20 Ebdale Street, Frankston) on Saturday, 5 November from 10.30am to 3pm. Book here: half-day-mental-health-matters-workshop

Cr Sue Baker recently participated in a half-day session after having attended a 90-minute introductory webinar and said it allowed her to hone her skills when offering mental health support to those who need it.

“We all know someone who is struggling with mental health issues, even though we may not be aware of it,” Cr Baker said.

“Unlike physical illness, someone’s mental health problems may be hidden under the stigma of shame.”

Cr Baker is just one of the many participants who say that the workshops have empowered them to recognize, connect and respond to those who are experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

Anyone can have a conversation that may help someone who is struggling and even save a life. Everyone should know how.
