New Men as Role Models mentoring program forges life skills
Published on 14 June 2022
Frankston City Council’s Community Strengthening team have partnered with Whitelion Youth and Jesuit Social Services to launch the free Men as Role Models mentoring program for men aged 15-24 years.
Applications are now open for both mentees and more experienced male role models to act as mentors.
Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities, such as boating, fishing, woodworking and other fun events with Frankston-based volunteer groups. Through the program, young mentees will build new skills, forge friendships and strengthen their connection to the community.
Mayor Nathan Conroy said: “Our main goal is the prevention of violence in all forms by encouraging all males to be the best version of themselves. We believe having the presence of strong male role models in their lives will have a positive and lasting impact.”
As a mentee, you will:
- get to participate in unique activities and learn new skills
- improve your self-esteem and confidence
- build connections with others who share similar interests to you
- have a trusted person to talk to outside family and school
As a mentor, you will:
- have the chance to change someone’s life for the better
- benefit from formal volunteer experience and mentorship training
- build your leadership skills and include the experience on your CV
- join a community of like-minded individuals
The program offers mentors full training and requires 2 hours per fortnight for a minimum period of 6 months.
All participants will be screened for suitability before mentorships are assigned, and the program includes monthly ‘community of practice’ catch-ups.
The program is free. Mentors and mentees are encouraged to register their interest through a quick and easy online sign-up. For more information, please click here or contact Men as Role Models Program Manager, Jason Rodwell, on 0417 040 094.
