Frankston prepares for new separate purple-lid glass bin initiative
Published on 24 August 2023
Frankston City Council is preparing residents for a change in the way we recycle, with a new Victorian Government initiative of introducing a separate purple-lid bin for glass recycling across Victoria. The new bin is part of a Victorian Government commitment to reduce waste to landfill by 80% and improve the quality of recycled materials.
Frankston City residents can expect their new separate purple glass recycling bin to be delivered between 28 August and 29 September, with first collections occurring in October. Glass collection will occur once every four weeks, with a collection calendar delivered with the new separate purple glass recycling bin.
The new separate purple glass recycling bin joins the existing three household bins – yellow mixed recycling bin for plastic, metal and paper/cardboard recycling; green for food and garden organics; and red for landfill.
Council received positive feedback regarding the separate purple glass recycling bin during community engagement on the Waste Circularity Plan in 2022 and 2023.
One of those community members is waste reduction advocate Kerry Rainer, who supports the new separate purple-lid glass recycling bin and its potential impact on waste reduction:
"The new separate purple glass recycling bin is an important step in the right direction, and I encourage all residents to embrace this initiative and learn how they can make a difference,” said Ms Rainer.
Ms Rainer has been on her own inspiring waste circularity journey since 2019.
“My waste journey first began through meeting a member of Frankston’s Gardens for Wildlife program. I was so inspired by her commitment and approach to reduce her family's waste output. Our household decided to take on the waste challenge as well. Conscious purchasing and the introduction of FOGO were the main game changers,” explained Ms Rainer.
The new separate purple glass recycling bin will allow residents to separate glass jars and bottles from other recyclables, which will prevent contamination and improve the quality of other recycling materials. By using the bin correctly, residents can help create new glass products and even use recycled materials to fix local roads and footpaths.
“By reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and reducing costs by improving the separation of recyclable material, we can create a more sustainable future for the benefit of our community, for our environment and beyond," explained Ms Rainer.
To help residents understand the new system and how to use the bin correctly, Frankston City Council hosted community information sessions across the municipality in March, April and August 2023. There is one remaining session on Friday, 15 September, from 9am to 12 at Carrum Downs Shopping Centre, for anyone interested in attending.
