Frankston City Council’s L2P Program is celebrating its 250th learner driver, Jack, whose life has been transformed by the Program.

The L2P Program connects volunteer driving mentors with learners aged 16 to 21 years old who lack the support needed to learn to drive and complete the 120 hours of driving experience required.

Volunteer mentors are making a big difference in helping local young people gain their probationary driver’s license and increase opportunities for education, training, and employment.

Before joining the L2P Program in 2023, Jack was struggling to find an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic, often walking long distances to job interviews. Paired with volunteer mentor, Steve, he was able to gain driving experience and confidently pass his driving test.

This independence has enabled Jack to secure an apprenticeship with Cirelli Tyres where he can travel offsite and fully perform in his new role.

“The L2P Program doesn’t just teach young people to drive. It empowers them to take control of their future. It’s so inspiring to see young learners like Jack gain the skills they need to succeed,” said Frankston City Councillor Emily Green.

The L2P Program is funded by the TAC, administered by the Department of Transport and Planning, and managed by Frankston City Council. Sponsors include Frankston Lions Club, Rotary Frankston Peninsula 2.0, and Simply Red Signs.

If you or someone you know would like to become a volunteer mentor, please contact the L2P Project Officer on 1300 322 322 or email L2P@frankston.vic.gov.au.
