Mayoral Statement – Support for Jewish community
Published on 09 December 2024
Australia’s Jewish community is suffering through a traumatic year, with increasing numbers of anti-Semitic incidents occurring throughout the country.
The Jewish community in Victoria is the largest in Australia, with an estimated 60,000 Jewish people. It is very upsetting to see what has been happening in in the greater Melbourne area, which is not aligned to the values of inclusivity, acceptance and understanding for our fellow human beings.
No form of ethnic and/or religious persecution is acceptable. We live in a pluralistic society where all views and cultures should be respected. As Mayor of Frankston City, it is important for me to emphasise to our Jewish community that they are valued, protected and safe.
Frankston City Council does not accept any form of religious hate. We will continue to liaise closely with Victoria Police to immediately address any concerns from our residents. You can call Frankston Police Station on (03) 9784 5555 or speak to one of our Community Safety officers on 1300 322 322.
I encourage you all to respect and care for each other and thank you for continuing to uphold an open, welcoming community.
Mayor, Cr Kris Bolam JP FIML GAICD
