Apply for a heavy vehicle permit on private property

You will need a heavy vehicle permit to park a heavy vehicle on private property within a residential zone. A vehicle will be considered a heavy vehicle if it is 7.5 metres (or more) in length or weighs 4.5 tonnes (or more).

If a vehicle exceeds these measurements it can only be parked on a road in a built-up area for a maximum of one hour unless parking signs say that it is allowed or the driver is actively picking up or setting down goods.

Heavy vehicles may include:

  • trucks
  • caravans
  • campers
  • boats
  • trailers.

Your vehicle can be parked on the road if:

  • it is registered
  • under 7.5 metres in length  
  • weighs less than 4.5 tonnes.

Under Community Local Law 2020, 2.20 Storage of Vehicles(PDF, 1MB), registered caravans, boats and trailers can only stay on the road for 7 days.
