Home Compost Rebate Program

Composting is something we all can do to minimise waste going to landfill and help make a big difference for the environment.

Food in landfill breaks down anaerobically (without air) and produces methane, a greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change. Composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions and returns vital nutrients to the soil, and we can all make a difference.

Home composting helps reduce waste and creates valuable soil additives for our gardens. It can work in partnership with your green lid food and garden waste bin as each compost system accepts different food waste items.

Every household that composts divert an average 3kg of food waste per week from landfill, or approximately 156kg per household per year.

Composting at home is a great way to:

  • cut your waste in half
  • save money
  • reduce your carbon footprint
  • make rich soil and fertiliser to grow healthy gardens.

Eligibility

Our Home Compost Rebate Program is available to Frankston City Council homeowners and renters.

There’s a limit of:

  • Two (2) rebates per household, per financial year. Bokashi enzyme refills and worm replacements are unlimited.

Which composting system should I choose?

There are various composting systems to choose from, such as compost bins, worm farms, bokashi bins, underground composters and even pet poo composters. To get the best out of your composting experience, it's essential to select the system that best fits your household's specific needs.

Minimise your waste

The best way to manage food waste is to minimise the amount that becomes waste in the first place. You can do this by only buying what you need and using everything you’ve got.
