Your building permit will include information on when your work needs to commence and be completed. If you are unsure, the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) website has a list of timeframes and required completion dates for different types of work.
If you would like to make changes to any conditions, approved plans or documents included in your building permit, you may request a variation.
If you have appointed a building surveyor, your surveyor may be able to arrange this for you if the proposed variation is warranted. If you have not appointed a building surveyor, you will need to submit a building permit variation form to Council.
Amendments must be approved before you carry out any works outside the scope of the original permit.

If you are unable to commence or complete building work in time, you can request an extension.
If you have appointed a building surveyor, your surveyor may be able to arrange this for you if the extent of the building work is warranted. If you have not appointed a building surveyor, you will need to submit a building permit extension form to Council.

Requests to extend a permit must be submitted before the completion date listed on the permit. If you submit your request after the completion date, you will need to apply for a new building permit.
If a building permit lapses but building work continues, that work then becomes illegal and the relevant building surveyor may issue a building order to stop work.
