Apply for a building permit

Most building work in Victoria requires a building permit. This may include:

  • the construction of a new building including sheds and garages
  • alterations or additions to an existing building
  • demolition of an existing building
  • changes of use to a building
  • other works including decks, balconies, verandahs, pergolas, fences, swimming pools and pool/spa fencing.

Step 1.Prepare your application

Before applying, visit our building permit process page to make sure your application is well-prepared.

Your application must include:

  • A recent copy of the Certificate of Title and Plan of Subdivision, including any restrictions such as a Section 173 Agreement. You can obtain a Certificate of Title from the Landata website.
  • Copies of architectural drawings, specifications and plans.

Step 2.Read the checklist

Read the building checklists to make sure you have included any additional information required for your specific permit type.

Step 3.Download the application form

Download and complete the Application for Building Permit(PDF, 310KB)  form.

Step 4.Submit your application

Send your completed form and supporting documents to:

Step 5.What happens next?

We will contact you to pay the relevant fee.
