Register a swimming pool or spa

For information on the updated certificate lodgement dates for swimming pool and spas, please see here.

The Victorian Government introduced new safety laws for pools and spas in December 2019. If you are the owner of a property with a pool or spa, you must:

  • register your pool or spa
  • lodge a certificate of barrier compliance
  • have your safety barrier inspected and certified every four years.

If your pool or spa was built after 1 November 2020, you will need to lodge a certificate of barrier compliance with your registration.

If you’re unable to apply online, please contact us to arrange an alternative method.

Online

Step 1.Check your requirements

Depending on when your pool or spa was built, you may need to lodge a certificate of barrier compliance with your registration. Visit our safety laws for pools and spas page for more information.

It is the responsibility of the property owner to register a pool or spa. If you are a tenant, contact your property manager directly.

Step 2.Prepare your application

Your application must include:

  • your contact details.
  • property address of where the pool or spa is located.
  • an estimated date of when the pool or spa was built. If a date cannot be verified, the current safety laws will apply.
  • a certificate of barrier compliance (if required).
  • A credit or debit card to pay the application fee.

Step 3.Submit your application

Register a permanent pool or spa

Register a temporary or relocatable pool or spa

If you are unsure what type of pool or spa to select, view registration requirements on the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) website.

Step 4.What happens next?

We will send you written confirmation confirming:

  • that your pool or spa has been registered.
  • the date of build.
  • the barrier standards that apply to your pool or spa.
  • when you need to lodge your first or next certificate of barrier compliance.

Once your pool or spa has been registered, and you have lodged your first certificate, you will need to get your pool or spa inspected and certified every four years.
