We’re upgrading Kareela Reserve, Frankston!

Works will kick off in late March 2024, and once complete in about late June, you’ll be able to enjoy:

  • Play equipment for all age groups (basket swing, toddler and junior swings, carousel, spring rocker, crawl tunnel, multi-play tower with two slides, shop, abacus, climbing rope, talking tubes)
  • New picnic facilities and seating
  • Nature play
  • Improved landscaping and more trees

The popular kick-about grassed area will be maintained.

How we select and design play space upgrades

All our play space upgrades are designed and delivered in alignment with our Play Space Strategy 2021 which was endorsed by Council in 2021.

As part of the development of the strategy, all play spaces across Frankston City were audited and assessed, community consultation was undertaken, and recommendations and priorities developed in alignment with Council’s Long Term Infrastructure Plan (a 10-year plan that guides Council and shapes Frankston City’s future in line with our Community Vision and Council Plan).

The strategy outlines a range of service levels for play spaces across the municipality which guide the features and facilities that can be included in each space.

Kareela Reserve is identified as a local (major) level play space which is intended to service the immediate local area (400m walking catchment) for regular short-term stays (up to an hour).

When we shared the concept design with you back in September 2023, we received several comments from the community that they wanted more toddler play.  We therefore updated the design to include additional junior / toddler play items.

We understand that the community highly values its play spaces, and we can’t wait for you to enjoy the upgraded Kareela Reserve!

Other local play spaces to explore

While work is underway at Kareela Reserve, why not try visiting some great reserves nearby, including:

The newly upgraded Willow Reserve is a 20-minute walk or a three-minute drive away, complete with picnic shelter, drinking fountain and brand-new play space.

Orwil Reserve was upgraded in late 2022 and is a six-minute drive from Kareela Reserve. It features a play space, walking paths and seating and is right next to Orwil House, a wonderful local community centre.

Don’t forget to check out the iconic fire engine truck at Rosemary Reserve, an eight-minute drive away. This was also upgraded in 2023 and includes play equipment that caters for all age groups, picnic facilities, seating, bins, drinking fountain and beautiful pinecone decorations that pay homage to the area’s history as a pine plantation.
