Place naming

Frankston City Council is a naming authority under the Naming rules for places in Victoria 2022 - Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities and is responsible for the naming and renaming of roads, features and localities within the municipality.

The Naming Rules are mandatory for naming authorities in Victoria and are provided for under section 5 of the Geographic Place Names Act 1998. They are an instructional guide to naming, renaming, and adjusting boundaries of features, localities and roads in Victoria.

At Frankston City Council, we have a ‘Road, Locality and Feature Naming Policy’ which provides a consistent approach for the naming of places, ensuring any naming decision is made in the best interest of the community.

The process for formally naming a road/feature/location invites feedback from the community and is to be approved by the Council, and the final outcome is dependent on State Government approval. This process can take six to twelve months.

Frankston City Council encourages names that act as a reminder of local history, culture and citizens, whilst being mindful of needing to achieve a balanced representation of:

  • Indigenous Australia
  • Gender equality
  • Local historical events or figures
  • A multicultural present

Any naming requests within the City of Frankston must adhere to:
