Seaford Wetlands

The wetlands are well known for superb bird watching opportunities. There is a viewing platform near Austin Road and a good viewing point at the end of Mona Street. A viewing mound at Seaford North Primary School is open to the public outside school hours.

A well-made cycle/walking trail extends around most of the perimeter of the wetlands. Picnic tables are available at various locations. To extend your walk, Kananook Creek Reserve and Seaford Foreshore are about one kilometre and 1.5 kilometres, respectively, west of the reserve.

The remnant wetland areas are the largest remaining natural wetlands of their type in Port Phillip and Western Port basins.

Seaford Wetlands Rejuvenation Project

We’re enhancing Seaford Wetlands by preserving and protecting this precious asset, while sensitively upgrading community facilities.

The $5 million Seaford Wetlands Rejuvenation Project was informed by community and stakeholder engagement and will improve safety, access, and connection for visitor, strengthen ecological health and embed cultural values into the wetlands’ design and management.

The project will deliver:

A new shared-use path and pedestrian bridge to ‘close the loop,’ by creating a full pedestrian circuit around the Seaford Wetlands
Habitat and ecological improvements
Cultural Values Study and self-guided biocultural interpretative trail
Upgraded signage and facilities, including a new viewing platform

Most of the initiatives will be delivered by Frankston City Council, with City of Kingston to deliver the shared user path at Patterson Lakes that will connect to the new bridge. All works are expected to be complete by September/October 2024.

The project is part of the Victorian Government’s $315 million Suburban Parks Program to create more than 6,500 hectares of new and upgraded parks and trails across Melbourne’s outer suburbs and delivers on Open Space for Everyone Strategy, a blueprint guiding the planning, management, and delivery of Melbourne’s open spaces for the next 30 years.

Fire Danger Rating

Visiting a reserve on days of Total Fire Ban or higher extreme or catastrophic Fire Danger Rating places you at risk and potentially in danger.

Frankston City Council takes fires safety seriously and takes action throughout the year to reduce the fire risk at Seaford Wetlands.

These activities include:

Creating and maintaining fuel breaks within the reserve
Maintaining grass heights with slashing, brush cutting and tractors year round
Removal of fine fuels such as loose and fallen branches
Annual inspections and maintenance of Fire Access Tracks, to ensure emergency service vehicles can access the reserve
Inspect access points, gates and locks.
