A true celebration of what can be achieved when community work together! Council has been working with community, including Rotary Frankston Peninsula 2.0, Frankston Yacht Club and Accessible Beaches Australia, to improve access to our beaches as part of our Disability Action Plan 2021-2025: Rotary Frankston Peninsula 2.0 led community fundraising efforts for the matting through their annual Duck Derby on Kananook Creek at the Frankston Waterfront Festival, Frankston Yacht Club have volunteered to manage the matting and Accessible Beaches Australia have provided their invaluable expertise to the project team and will help promote.
The matting, made from 100% recycled materials, is a temporary installation that is rolled out and pegged down. It can be moved around to suit the ever-changing tidelines without negative impacts on our natural environment.
Beach access matting is a valuable resource that enhances accessibility for a wide range of individuals.
• It primarily benefits people with mobility challenges, including those who use wheelchairs, walkers, or other assistive devices, by providing a stable and smooth surface to navigate over the often uneven and soft sand.
• Families with young children that have strollers and beach carts also find it easier to reach the shoreline without struggling through the sand.
• The matting acts as a clear beach entrance/exit place marker, which can be particularly helpful for people who are blind, or vision impaired as well as visitors who are unfamiliar with the area.
• People with sensory sensitivities to the texture of sand may use the matting as a refuge when visiting the beach with family and friends.
…The list goes on!
The beach matting will be available outside Frankston Yacht Club (30N Long Island Drive, Frankston) over the summer season on Saturdays during their operating hours. For more information on the beach access matting contact Frankston Yacht Club on frankstonyachtclub@gmail.com
