National Tree Day Event - Seaford Wetlands - 2024

National Tree Planting Day 31 July

The Edithvale-Seaford Wetland is the largest natural wetland of its type in the Port Phillip and Westernport basins. It is all that remains of Carrum Carrum Swamp, which once covered more than 4,000 hectares from Mordialloc in the north to Frankston in the south. It is estimated that at any one time, as many as 7,000 birds make the Edithvale-Seaford Wetland their home. Star attractions include: 190 bird species 38 migratory species protected under international agreements and Australian legislation migratory waders, including Latham's Snipe from the northern islands of Japan. Following on from Frankston City Councils 2017s National Tree Day event in the same location, this year we are returning to plant the mid and understory - it’s not just about trees! Mid and ground story structure are crucial for ecological health, providing critical food and nesting services for small birds, mammals, reptiles and insects.
